Literal: Ten Years Later

We are celebrating our first ten years here at Literal, an anniversary that has arrived accompanied by various changes. The most evident has manifested itself as the need to move to a new home. After a decade of delivering a quarterly magazine in print created with all the dedication and effort that a team passionate about expressing its way of seeing the world is capable of giving —a team comprised by David Medina Portillo, Malva Flores, Tanya Huntington,  José Antonio Simón, Lorís Simón Salum, Adolfo Castañón, Maarten VanDelden, Yvon Grenier, C.M. Mayo, José Antonio Simón, Lorís Simón Salum and yours truly—, in January 2015 we will migrate into the digital world. This decision is merely the product of a reality transformed by the Internet and arrives, as all changes do, with the usual dosis of conflicting sentiment.

On one hand, it saddens us to see this stage come to an end: Literal is our home, our letter of introduction and, for me personally, my own identity. At the time, the idea of launching a bilingual and cultural magazine, of creating a familiar world between its pages, always seemed necessary to us not only due to the geographic circumstances from which the project sprang, but out of a conciliatory mettle that has constantly nourished the spirit of Literal. Through our endeavors, the existence of two visions, of two cultures divided by language and ideology, has also become our physical and conceptual role.

On the other hand, this move brings with it a breath of fresh air, as well as many opportunities for expansion and presence, all backed by the same eagerness to make room for all artistic forms of expression in order to ensure that we achieve this. Our digital site will not only continue to remain loyal to the spirit that has guided us over the past decade; it will also be updated on a daily basis in order to promote coexistence and healthy criticism.

As for special projects, our course will remain the same: we will continue to expand the various collections of books we have launched over the past few years while at the same time expanding our video and sound programs, as well as the short film contest we launched one year ago.

Over the course of this first decade, there have been many gratifying experiences: from receiving various prizes and awards for our work to witnessing the passage of Nobel prize winners, intellectuals and fresh voices across these pages. This concept will continue to prevail under our roof, always with the animus of sustaining collaborations of quality and synchronicity, always in an endeavor to build cultural bridges so that dialogue may flow. For all these years, we thank you, our readers, for your loyalty. It is our sincere hope that you will accompany us on this new adventure which, like all humanistic projects, has a single goal: to reflect on the world in order to understand, rethink and experience it both fully and consciously.

Hemos cumplido diez años en Literal y el aniversario llega acompañado de varios cambios. El más evidente se manifiesta en la necesidad de mudarnos de casa. Después de una década de entregas trimestrales, de una revista impresa realizada con toda la dedicación y el empeño de la que cualquier equipo de trabajo apasionado por expresar su forma de ver el mundo es capaz de dar—conformado por David Medina Portillo, Malva Flores, Tanya Huntington, Adolfo Castañón,  Maarten VanDelden, Yvon Grenier, C.M. Mayo, José Antonio Simón, Lorís Simón y una servidora—, en enero del 2015 trasladaremos la revista al mundo digital. Esta decisión es meramente el producto de una realidad que el internet ha transformado y llega, como todos los cambios, con la dosis normal de sentimientos encontrados.

Por un lado sentimos tristeza al final de esta etapa: Literal es nuestro hogar, nuestra carta de presentación y, en mi caso personal, mi propia identidad. En su momento, la idea de iniciar una revista bilingüe y cultural, de crear un mundo familiar entre sus páginas, siempre nos pareció necesaria no sólo por la ubicación geográfica dentro de la cual surge el proyecto, sino por un afán conciliatorio que constantemente ha nutrido el espíritu de Literal. En nuestro quehacer se ha traducido al papel física y conceptualmente la existencia de dos visiones, de dos culturas divididas por su lengua e ideología.

Por otro lado, la mudanza llega como una corriente de aire fresco con muchas posibilidades de expansión y presencia, con el mismo afán de dar cabida a todas las expresiones artísticas y una mayor viabilidad para lograrlas. Nuestro sitio digital no sólo seguirá apegado al espíritu que en esta década nos ha guiado sino que continuará actualizándose a diario, promoviendo la convivencia y la sana crítica.

 En cuanto a nuestros proyectos especiales, su curso seguirá siendo el mismo: continuaremos nutriendo las diversas colecciones de libros lanzadas en los últimos años así como la ampliación de los programas de video y sonido, además del concurso de cortometraje al que dimos inicio hace un año.

A lo largo de esta década han sido muchas las experiencias gratificantes que hemos tenido: desde haber recibido diversos premios y reconocimientos por nuestra labor, hasta haber visto pasar por nuestras páginas premios Nobel, intelectuales y las voces más nuevas. Esta idea seguirá permeando nuestra casa, siempre con el ánimo de mantener colaboraciones de calidad y encuentro, siempre con el afán de mantener un puente cultural para que fluya el diálogo. Por todos estos años agradecemos a nuestros lectores su fidelidad, deseando que nos acompañen en esta nueva aventura que, como todos los proyectos humanísticos, tiene una sola meta: reflexionar el mundo para entenderlo, repensarlo y vivirlo plena y conscientemente.
