Civil Disobedience / Desobediencia civil

In recent years, we have seen a wide array of uprisings around the world. Protesters have taken to the streets and main squares while at the same time, inciting others to take direct action against the State or participate in a variety of civil disobedience campaigns via the Internet. We are witnessing the resurgence of a social activism thought to have expired in the 1970s due to the accelerated emergence of global markets. The overwhelming crisis experienced by these markets has brought with it a climate of social instability. Therefore, here and there, different social strata are once again manifesting themselves publicly. Malcolm Gladwell, a staunch critic of social media and contributor to this edition, believes that no Wiki-activism is capable of wielding actual pressure on the status quo. So what kind of activism is this, anyway? With articles by Baggini, Grenier, Centeno, Woldenberg, and Chaguaceda, hopefully, this issue of Literal. Latin American Voices will provide us with some answers.

En los últimos años hemos visto una amplia cadena de movilizaciones en varias partes del mundo. Ocupan las calles y plazas y, a la vez, se convocan vía internet en acciones directas contra los Estados o en campañas de desobediencia civil de distinta índole. Se trata del resurgimiento de un activismo social que creímos clausurado en los años setenta, con la apertura acelerada de los mercados mundiales. A la abrumadora crisis de estos mercados le corresponde una situación de inestabilidad social. Así, distintos sectores de la sociedad de aquí o allá vuelven a manifestarse públicamente. Malcolm Gladwell, un sólido crítico de los social media y colaborador de este número, piensa que ningún wiki-activismo tiene la capacidad de ejercer una presión real sobre el orden establecido. ¿Qué clase de activismo estamos presenciando entonces?
