Evil and Its Names / El mal y sus nombres

Our previous issue was dedicated to boredom. While we were planning it, we neverexpected there would be unsettling similarities between the phantoms of tedium and the manifestations of evil that stem from our being “modern”. “My name is legion,” says the demon from the Gospel. And in effect, evil has many names, many of which are explored in this issue of Literal: from the evil of poverty to that of sickness; from the evil imposed by ideological orthodoxies of the past century (sanctifi ed at the time as revolutionary violence) to the banal, rational evil of Nazi functionaries and bureaucrats; or even the brutish evil, lacking ideology, that explodes into urban violence or just marginalization—the drug dealer, the kidnapping industry, the Mara gangs, etc. Thanks to the New York Museum of Modern Art, our pages are graced by the firm, sometimes lacerating outlines of one of the greatest artists of our time: Lucian Freud. In the same vein, we close the issue under the acid gaze of John Alexander. As an oasis, we have Thomas Glassford and Cara Barer. / El número anterior de Literal estuvo dedicado al aburrimiento. Cuando planeamos dicha edición nunca advertimos la inquietante cercanía entre los fantasmas del tedio y las manifestaciones del mal a partir de que somos “modernos”. “Mi nombre es legión”, dice el demonio en el Evangelio. Y en efecto, el mal tiene muchos nombres, males sobre los que abunda esta edición de Literal: desde el mal de la pobreza y la enfermedad, el mal investido por las ortodoxias ideológicas del siglo pasado (santifi cado en su momento como violencia revolucionaria), el mal banal pero racional administrado por el aparato de funcionarios y burócratas hitlerianos, hasta el mal en bruto, sin ideología, que estalla como violencia urbana o mera lumpenización del mal contemporáneo: el narco, la industria del secuestro, las bandas de los maras, etcétera. Gracias a la cortesía del Museo de arte Moderno de Nueva York, enmarcan nuestras páginas el trazo firme y a veces lacerante de uno de los grandes artistas de nuestros días: Lucian Freud. Junto con él, cerramos el número bajo la mirada ácida de John Alexander y un remanso: Thomas Glassford y Cara Barer..
