The Price of Luxury / El precio del lujo

It is said that since man became man, luxury has been part of his life —from primitive to hypertechnological societies— nothing can replace our impulse toward festive “representations” of superabundance. Whether as a hierarchical symbol or as a tool against profit and utilitarianism, luxury has been a recurring subject for the most perceptive and the most prosaic minds, from Veblen to Coco. This issue of Literal dedicates a few pages to the this theme in the midst of one of the most acute crises that has faced our societies in recent history. We know that in these circumstances any presentation of this theme might appear suicidal, but in an effort to be true to the mission with which we began Literal, we continue to reflect on the questions that move and touch man. In this winter issue we examine the historical, philosophical, and economic considerations of luxury through the work of Christopher J. Berry, Margo Glantz, Yvon Grenier, Annie Leibovitz, and The Readymade. / Dicen que desde que el hombre es hombre el lujo ha sido parte de él: nada puede reemplazar nuestro impulso (desde las sociedades primitivas a las hipertecnológicas) hacia las “representaciones” festivas de la sobreabundancia. Ya sea como símbolo de jerarquía o dispositivo contra la ganancia y el utilitarismo, el lujo ha sido materia recurrente de algunas de las mentes más lúcidas o de las más mundanas, de Veblen a Coco. Este número de Literal ofrece algunas páginas en torno al tema en medio de una de las crisis más agudas que han enfrentado nuestras sociedades en su historia reciente. Dentro de tales circunstancias cualquier entrega con este tema puede parecer suicida, lo sabemos, pero con el afán de serle fiel a la misión que dio inicio a Literal y continuar reflexionando sobre las cuestiones que conmueven al hombre, en este número de invierno se analizan y exponen las causas históricas, filosóficas y económicas del lujo a través de los trabajos de Christopher J. Berry, Margo Glantz, Yvon Grenier, Annie Leibovitz y el readymade.
