Freaks / Monstruos

The grotesque has always held a powerful fascination for the mind and imagination, at times as metaphor for chaos and absolute evil, and at others as a manifestation of the sacred and even of laughter. All deformity—banal or extraordinary—as much attraction as revulsion, evokes a state of panic or a howl of laughter. It is Dionysus or the freak boy gang staging a fight in our streets, which—in the hour of our technological barbarity—Serigo González Rodríguez calls the daily “sacred” on a global scale. In one of the essays selected for this issue of Literal—dedicated to the universe of the freak—André Pieyre de Mandiargues affirms that, on the aesthetic plane, the grotesque belongs to the realm of beauty no less than to that of ugliness: in it we can see one of the best examples of those mysterious points at which beauty and ugliness converge, just as good and evil do at various disturbing ethical crossroads.

This edition is framed by interviews of three personalities undisputable central to international culture: Guillermo del Toro, director of horror films; Margaret Atwood, recent winner of the Premio Príncipe de Asturias (2008); and Rob Riemen, Dutch philosopher, director of the Nexus Institute, and author of Nobility ofSpirit. In addition, we are presenting an article by Adolfo Castañón a writer and a member of our committee that recently was recognized by the Xavier Villaurrutia Award. / Lo monstruoso siempre ha ejercido una poderosa fascinación sobre el pensamiento y la imaginación, a veces como metáfora del caos y el mal absolutos, pero también como manifestación de lo sagrado y de la risa. Toda deformidad banal o extrema despierta así el pánico o la carcajada, tanto como la atracción o el asco. Es Dionisos o la pandilla freak que asecha en nuestras calles escenificando —en la hora de nuestra barbarie tecnológica— aquello que Sergio González Rodríguez llama lo “sagrado” cotidiano a escala global. En uno de los ensayos recogidos en este número de Literal dedicado al universo freak, André Pieyre de Mandiargues afirma que, en el plano estético, lo monstruoso entra en la categoría de la belleza no menos que en la de la fealdad: en él podemos ver uno de los ejemplos seguros de esos misteriosos puntos en los cuales la belleza y la fealdad convergen, al igual que el mal y el bien en algunos inquietantes cruceros de la ética.

Enmarcan a esta edición tres entrevistas realizadas a personalidades indiscutibles del medio cultural internacional: el director de cine de horror Guillermo del Toro; Margaret Atwood, fl amante ganadora del Premio Príncipe de Asturias y Rob Riemen, filósofo holandés autor de Nobleza de espíritu y director del Nexus Institute. Ofrecemos también un texto de Adolfo Castañón, escritor siempre imprescindible y miembro de nuestro consejo editorial, distinguido este año con el Premio Xavier Villaurrutia.
