Intellectuals / Intelectuales

An intellectual is one who intervenes in the public discussion at the margin of his profession, in such a manner that publishing an article in a specialized magazine is not about being an intellectual, but a scientist or a professor. It is said that the fi gure of the intellectual has diminished –or even disappeared– but then, who are Vargas Llosa, Chomsky, Saramago, Hitchens, Krugman or even (whether we like it or not) Dr. Huntingon? The media, whom we usually accuse of the annihilation of these beacons of social conscience, is not its enemy but rather its natural habitat, one shared with the journalist or the professional commentator on a more open stage.

The present edition of Literal is dedicated to the encounter of this contemporary pensive fi gure. In this sense, we offer as a central theme of this edition an unpublished text from Octavio Paz: “Writers and artists in the history of Mexico”. Let this issue be a rendition to revive one of the most penetrating and enlightened intellectuals of recent times. / Intelectual es aquel que interviene en la discución pública al margen de su profesión, de modo que –por ejemplo– publicar un artículo en una revista especializada no es ser intelectual, sino un científico o un profesor. Se dice que la figura del intelectual ha menguado o, incluso, que ha desaparecido. Pero entonces, qué son Vargas Llosa, Chomsky, Saramago, Hitchens, Krugman y (nos guste o no) el doctor Huntington. Los medios, a quienes habitualmente acusamos de la extinción de estos “faros” de la conciencia de una sociedad, no son sus enemigos sino parte de su hábitat natural, el que comparte ahora con el periodista o el opinador profesional en un escenario más abierto.

El presente número de Literal está dedicado al reencuentro con esta figura del pensamiento contemporáneo. En este sentido, ofrecemos como eje de nuestra edición un texto inédito de Octavio Paz: “Escritores y artistas en la historia de México”. Valga esta entrega para volver a uno de los intelectuales más lúcidos e incisivos de los últimos tiempos.
